TERRORISM
We love to create Us and Them. Our thing in U2 is: no Them, only Us. June 23, 2005 ー Interview with Dave Fanning
Zealots often have no love for the world. They’re just getting through it to the next one. It’s a favourite topic. It’s the old cliché: “Eat shit now, pie in the sky when you die.” But I take Christ at his word: “On Earth as it is in Heaven.” 2005 ー Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas
We would like to turn our song into a prayer. And the prayer is that we don't become a monster in order to defeat a monster. That's our prayer tonight. July 21, 2015 ー Live introduction to "Miss Sarajevo" performed in Milan
But you see… people who are open spiritually are open to being manipulated more easily, are very vulnerable. The religious instinct is a very pure one in my opinion. But unless it’s met with a lot of rigor, it’s very hard to control. 2005 ー Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas
The coldness of the human heart is the thing that we’re all dealing with, in the wider dangerous sense of the word politics. If you’re talking about 9/11, living in these nervous times, you are dealing with the coldness of the human heart. People who think that ideas are more valuable than people, that’s what that is. April 14, 2005 ー Interview with VH1 Spotlight
Most terrorists want to change the world. Well, add eternity to that, and people can go a lot further to pursue their ends. It’s a big prize, isn’t it, eternity?… But of course, this is always a corruption of some holy thesis, whether it's the Koran or the Bible. 2005 ー Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas
In the end, ideas are not worth as much as people. Whenever you meet a philosophy where that is not true, and where ideas are worth more than people, you have to be on your guard. 2005 ー Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas
They hate music, they hate women, they even hate little girls, they hate everything we love. May 23, 2017 ー Interview with Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) (Responding to Manchester Bombing of May 22, 2017)
I'm interested in the mentality of violence; terrorism interests me. Because it's the everyday Holocaust of our times. The idea that two IRA men were blown up because they stood too close to the bomb they had set ー because they wanted to see the carnage ー is beyond my understanding, and I'm fascinated by it. Terrorists are ordinary men who have the ability to take the lives of other ordinary men because of the way they see the world. October 8, 1987 ー “Bono: The Rolling Stone Interview” by David Breskin (Rolling Stone)
